REDUCING DEATH AND DISABILITY IN CHILDHOOD DUE TO INJURY AND THE 'SAFE KIDS AT PLAY' CAMPAIGN
EDM number 760 in 1999-00, proposed by Colin Breed on 18/05/2000.
That this House expresses deep concern that unintentional injury is the single largest cause of death and disability in children under the age of 14 years in the United Kingdom; notes that the number of severe accidents suffered by children while playing outside is on the increase; calls for greater education and awareness about injury prevention, while encouraging children to be more active and independent; commends the Child Accident Prevention Trust and its partners, Child Safe Scotland, Child Safe Wales, University College Hospital, Lewisham and Johnson & Johnson for developing the SAFE KIDS Campaign, which is committed to contributing to a 25 per cent. reduction in the number of deaths and serious injuries to children and young people aged 14 years and under by 2010; and welcomes the launch of the Campaign's theme for 2000, SAFE KIDS at Play, which aims to reduce accidents among children by helping them to develop safe places to play near their homes, which they can reach and use without risk of serious injury.
