London Marathon (No. 2)

That this House offers its warmest congratulations to the organisers of the 2000 London Marathon; notes that the London Marathon is now widely regarded as the best international marathon attracting a world-class field of international athletes; notes that the London Marathon has become one of the largest mass participation sporting events in the world and one of the most popular spectator events in the sporting calendar; records its thanks to the field of more than 30,000 participants who hope to raise between ú15 million and ú20 million pounds for charity, making the London Marathon one of the largest charitable fund-raising events in the country; notes also that the trading surpluses of the London Marathon Ltd are distributed through the London Marathon Charitable Trust Ltd which has now contributed over ú7 million to community sports and recreational facilities in London; and looks forward to the 21st Anniversary London Marathon due to be run in 2001.
