WORKERS' MEMORIAL DAY, 28TH APRIL

That this House notes that, in the United Kingdom annually, 5000 people are killed in the course of carrying out their duties and approximately 20,000 people die each year from work related diseases; congratulates the TUC for marking Workers' Memorial Day for the first time in 1999; welcomes the varied programme of activities planned for Friday, 28th April by trade unionists and health and safety representatives; and calls on the Government to give consideration to a form of national recognition of Workers' Memorial Day as a means of increasing awareness and understanding of the importance of health and safety in the workplace.
