City Title For Third Millennium Of The Christian Era

EDM number 647 in 1999-00, proposed by Bob Russell on 14/04/2000.

That this House welcomes the Government's proposal that at least one town should be awarded the title of city to commemorate the third millennium of the Christian era; believes that this should be bestowed on a place which can trace its roots to the first millennium; recognises that Colchester, Britain's oldest recorded town and the first capital of Roman Britain, was one of the earliest places in this country to establish a Christian church; notes that today it is the only one of the four British cities from the Roman period which no longer uses the title, such usage being lost in the mist of time; and considers that it would be appropriate if this historic anomaly was corrected by conferring a new charter restoring city status on the royal town of Colchester.
