Leeds United Tragedy And Football Safety (No. 2)
EDM number 627 in 1999-00, proposed by Paul Truswell on 10/04/2000.
That this House, in reaffirming its heartfelt condolences to the families of Kevin Speight and Christopher Loftus, supports the request of Leeds United that Galatasaray supporters should not be allowed to attend the second leg of the UEFA Cup tie in the city, believing that this would represent an unacceptable public safety risk; calls on UEFA to reject the demands of Galatasaray that the game should be played on a neutral ground, since this would imply Leeds fans shared responsibility for the tragic events of 5th April; and, while welcoming the genuine expressions of regrets from many Istanbul citizens, heartily condemns the reported comments of Galatasaray's Director of Football, Mete Razlikli, in which he makes the appalling and totally unsubstantiated accusation that the murdered Leeds supporters were known football hooligans.
