Chlamydia
EDM number 622 in 1999-00, proposed by Jenny Tonge on 10/04/2000.
That this House is alarmed that Chlamydia is the most common bacterial sexually-transmitted infection, affecting as many as 1 in 14 young people; notes that if left untreated it can cause long-term problems in women, such as pelvic inflammatory disease, ectopic pregnancy and infertility, and can also cause fertility and arthritic problems for men; is concerned that 70 per cent. of women and 50 per cent. of men who have Chlamydia do not have any symptoms, but is aware that once detected it can be easily cured with antibiotics; and calls on Her Majesty's Government to develop a national programme to improve public awareness and increase detection of this treatable infection.
