Equal Opportunity And Equal Access To Sports Clubs
EDM number 55 in 1999-00, proposed by Derek Wyatt on 18/11/1999.
That this House applauds the award of $1.9 million by a Massachusetts jury to nine members of the Haverhill Golf Club in Haverhill, Massachusetts, because they had been denied equal rights to membership and tee times; notes that such equality is denied to women in many sports in the UK; calls on the Government to introduce new legislation on equal opportunities to all public and private clubs; and, as an interim measure, asks the Home Office to request that magistrates should not give licences to any clubs, private or public, where there is not equal membership and equal access.
This motion has been signed by a total of 12 MPs.
