Closure Of Barclays Bank Todmorden
EDM number 479 in 1999-00, proposed by Chris McCafferty on 07/03/2000.
That this House condemns the decision by Barclays Bank plc to close its branch in Todmorden; notes with grave concern the large number of other closures announced by Barclays, many in semi-rural areas, causing considerable inconvenience to those local communities; notes that Barclays have only given one month's notice to the loyal customers and regrets the lack of corporate responsibility for the elderly, disabled, those without transport and the business community of Todmorden and district; regrets the demise of the concept of banking as a service to the community; deplores the practice of, choose your customer, choose your community, based on profit; and urges Barclays to reconsider their decision for the benefit of the community.
