Conduct Of The Honourable Member For Scarborough And Whitby
EDM number 45 in 1999-00, proposed by Nigel Evans on 17/11/1999.
That this House notes the comments of the honourable Member for Scarborough and Whitby on the current crisis facing the farming community, which appeared in the Whitby Gazette on 5th November; notes that the honourable Member has foregone the opportunity since then to withdraw those comments; therefore calls on the honourable Member to withdraw his suggestions that farmers should retire, that they are not encouraging different approaches and that they cannot see beyond their own fields; notes his opinion that the majority of local farmers are not passing on their businesses to younger people; believes that this illustrates a lack of understanding of countryside issues and the depressed state of farming in the United Kingdom; and calls upon the Government to take immediate action in support of the farming industry.
