Unicef Growing Up Alone Campaign

EDM number 428 in 1999-00, proposed by Hilton Dawson on 22/02/2000.

That this House supports the campaign launched by UNICEF, the UN Children's Fund, on behalf of children growing up alone around the world due to poverty, HIV/AIDS and armed conflict; notes that a 'Growing Up Alone' Exhibition and Reception is taking place at the House of Commons; and calls upon the Government to assist these children by increasing overseas development aid and the proportion spent on basic social services, continuing the leading role it has played in international efforts to promote debt relief for poor countries, lifting all reservations to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and establishing an independent Children's Rights Commissioner, supporting international agreements such as the Optional Protocol on child soldiers and the International Criminal Court, showing leadership in tackling the HIV/AIDS emergency and supporting the monitoring of children's rights abuses as part of conflict prevention and resolution.

This motion has been signed by a total of 88 MPs, 1 of these signatures have been withdrawn.
