Osteoporosis

That this House welcomes the findings of the Patients Association and Medical Women's Federation survey of health authorities and boards into local osteoporosis provision; notes with concern that 57 per cent. of health authorities do not have an osteoporosis strategy in place, 19 per cent. are not implementing the Royal College of Physicians' guidelines on osteoporosis and 56 per cent. do not include osteoporosis in their health improvement programme; and calls on the Government to give a higher profile and priority to osteoporosis, to invest more in services so that the RCP guidelines are implemented throughout the UK, to require all health authorities to offer bone densitometry screening to all patients at risk of osteoporosis, to encourage health authorities and primary care groups to include osteoporosis as a priority area for action in the local health improvement programme and to ensure that the National Service Framework on older people includes osteoporosis.
