Restoration Of Democracy In Pakistan
EDM number 206 in 1999-00, proposed by Jeremy Corbyn on 15/12/1999.
That this House condemns the military coup in Pakistan; does not believe that military rule can in any way enhance the prosperity and human rights of the people of Pakistan; believes that a reduction in the role of the military and in military expenditure, currently over 50 per cent. of government spending, are essential preconditions for the future development of Pakistan; and therefore calls on Her Majesty's Government to make it unequivocally clear to the current Pakistani regime that it must restore civilian rule, immediately announce a firm schedule for the holding of democratic elections, and disband the National Security Council, through which the military currently rules the country.
