Job Losses In BBC Wales

EDM number 204 in 1999-00, proposed by Julie Morgan on 15/12/1999.

That this House condemns the recent announcement of 28 posts lost in BBC Wales Resources and 44 lost in BBC Wales Production; believes that the 4 per cent. budget cut of ú2.1 million for 2000-01, and the similar cut planned for 2001-02, will cause permanent damage to the fabric of BBC Wales and make it impossible for it to maintain its public service remit fully; notes that these year-on-year cuts have led to increasing centralisation of BBC Wales in Cardiff to the detriment of the rest of the country - with BBC operations in Swansea, Bangor, Wrexham, etc., curtailed, under further threat and exposure to closure; recognises that this centralisation is particularly ironic given the present climate of devolution; and calls on the new Director General and the Board of Governors to rescind the planned cutbacks for 2001-02 in Wales.

This motion has been signed by a total of 32 MPs, 1 of these signatures have been withdrawn.
