ROYAL SOCIETY OF CHEMISTRY'S NATIONAL CHEMISTRY WEEK 1999

EDM number 144 in 1999-00, proposed by Donald Anderson on 06/12/1999.

That this House congratulates the Royal Society of Chemistry for organising the nationwide Chemistry Week from 19th to 26th November; applauds the wide variety of dozens of events held throughout the United Kingdom, including public lectures, displays, hands-on exhibits and school competitions, which have raised awareness of the vital role which chemistry plays in the modern world and in everyday life; notes the International Historic Chemical Landmark plaque unveiled on 19th November at St.Mary's Hospital, Paddington which commemorates Sir Alexander Fleming and the other scientists who worked on the antibiotic penicillin and its synthesis by chemists; notes that this plaque is part of a major worldwide campaign by the Royal Society of Chemistry, in cooperation with the American Chemical Society, to mark prestigious breakthroughs in chemistry; and notes in particular the crucial role that chemistry continues to play in underpinning, supporting and promoting health.
