Krishna Maharaj
EDM number 130 in 1999-00, proposed by Oona King on 01/12/1999.
That this House notes with extreme concern the imprisonment in Florida for the past 13 years of Krishna Maharaj, a British citizen, for the murder of two business associates; notes the serious discrepancies in procedure and evidence during his trial which have persuaded 152 honourable Members and the English Bar Human Rights Committee to make representations on his behalf, including, the failure of the court fo consider evidence from no fewer than eight alibi witnesses, or of lie detector tests failed by the main prosecution witness but passed by Krishna Maharaj, the attempt by the trial judge to solicit a bribe from the defendant and the judge's subsequent arrest during the course of the case, and evidence not disclosed at the trial that the murder victims had links to money laundering and drugs traffickers, which would have suggested other motives and suspects; further notes that an appeal on behalf of Krishna Maharaj is to be heard in the Florida Supreme Court on 8th December; and urges Her Majesty's Government to seek the safe return of Krishna Maharaj to the United Kingdom.
