Pigeons In Trafalgar Square (No. 2)

EDM number 1134 in 1999-00, proposed by Diane Abbott on 08/11/2000.

That this House supports the commitment of the Greater London Authority to create an attractive and accessible environment for citizens and visitors in Trafalgar Square as befits one of the capital's most famous landmarks; agrees that although pigeons are an integral part of the wildlife of London, the number of feral pigeons in the Square is estimated to have doubled in the past five years contributing to a level of overcrowding which is no longer tenable; agrees with the findings from numerous experts which attest to the alarming number of diseases which pigeons carry which post a potential hazard to public health; expresses its concern that the escalating amount of pigeon droppings deface and damage the buildings and monuments in the historic Square leaving Londoners with an annual cleaning bill of tens of thousands of pounds; believes that the most humane and responsible policy available is to decrease the number of pigeons by reducing the food supply and avoiding extreme measures such as culling; agrees that the accumulated problems caused by the increased volume of pigeons in recent years have become a deterrent for many people visiting Trafalgar Square; and believes that tackling this problem will encourage the use of the area for the enjoyment and benefit of all visitors.
