Cyprus
EDM number 112 in 1999-00, proposed by Andrew Dismore on 29/11/1999.
That this House is concerned that the full Cold War role of the United Kingdom's Cyprus sovereign bases and intelligence sites at the time of the Cyprus division has been unknown to honourable Members and investigating select committees for 25 years; welcomes the new insight by former Prime Minister Lord Callaghan in an interview with journalist Brendan O'Malley in the Times Higher Educational Supplement, into Britain's defence policy at the time; notes that the division of Cyprus allowed the United States to continue operating spying stations in the north after the invasion; and urges the Government to ensure that the United States' and Britain's altered strategic interests and consideration by the European Union of Turkey as a possible candidate member will provide Ankara with the opportunity to take positive and decisive steps towards ending the division of Cyprus, together with the US, UK, Greece and other members of the EU.
This motion has been signed by a total of 23 MPs, 1 of these signatures have been withdrawn.
