BBC Tv Licence Advertising Campaign
EDM number 1013 in 1999-00, proposed by Eric Illsley on 24/07/2000.
That this House condemns the crass and unfair advertising campaign currently being pursued in Barnsley and elsewhere by Envision Licensing on behalf of the BBC and the Television Licensing Authority which seeks to highlight particular streets in which there are residents who have not obtained a television licence, thereby embarrassing and distressing residents who have obtained a television licence and who have done nothing to deserve this unwarranted attention and embarrassment; questions the motives behind this campaign which is targeted at economically deprived and working class areas; questions the statistical analysis on which it is based; calls into the question the authority by which it was undertaken considering the lessening of the reputation of the BBC in those areas where the campaign has been pursued; and calls on the Head of the BBC, Greg Dyke, Envision Licensing and the Television Licensing Authority to withdraw this advertising campaign immediately.
