Self-Determination And The People Of Kashmir
EDM number 946 in 1998-99, proposed by Roger Godsiff on 26/10/1999.
That this House records that 27th October marks the 52nd anniversary of the Indian occupation of large areas of the state of Jammu and Kashmir; notes that a peaceful solution to one of the world's longest-running disputes appears no closer as the new millennium approaches; further notes that this year has seen not only nuclear tests conducted by the governments of both India and Pakistan but the escalation of tension across the line-of-control into full-scale military confrontation; commends both the United States of America and United Kingdom governments not only for continuing efforts to develop constructive dialogue and reduce tension but also for the measured response taken to recent domestic developments in Pakistan; and believes that Her Majesty's Government should continue to support vigorously the United Nations resolutions of 1948, 1949 and 1957 which upheld the right of the Kashmiri people to self-determination, whilst promoting a solution which incorporates the full involvement of the Kashmiri people.
