Demonstrations And Human Rights In China
EDM number 932 in 1998-99, proposed by Jeremy Corbyn on 21/10/1999.
That this House is deeply concerned about human rights abuses anywhere in the world; accordingly demands that Her Majesty's Government makes the strongest possible representations to the Chinese Government concerning the occupation of Tibet and the suppression inside China of the rights to free assembly and to membership of independent trade unions; is further concerned about the heavy-handed policing of the Chinese President's visit to the United Kingdom; firmly believes that demonstrators on behalf of victims of human rights abuses have a right to peaceful assembly and discussion in this country; and therefore calls upon Her Majesty's Government and the Metropolitan Police to ensure that this tradition is upheld.
