European Rail Freight Terminal For The North East Of England

EDM number 891 in 1998-99, proposed by Lembit Opik on 27/07/1999.

That this House believes that a European freight rail terminal should be built linking the North East of England in particular County Durham, Tyne and Wear and Northumberland to the Channel Tunnel; supports this project as an important springboard to the economic regeneration of this English region; welcomes the prospect of the 5000 new jobs that would be created within five years of such a terminal being built; welcomes recent proposals by Railtrack to upgrade the capacity of the East Coast Main Line giving freight operators better transit times; and calls on the Government to support its construction as a matter of urgency.
