Nutritional Supplements
EDM number 879 in 1998-99, proposed by Brian Cotter on 26/07/1999.
That this House welcomes the recent concessions made by Her Majesty's Government concerning the Medicines Control Agency's role in the classification of nutritional supplements; commends the move to ensure that the MCA is required to prove its case for re-classification of a product, rather than placing the burden of proof on the individual or company involved in the manufacture of complementary medicines; observes that although the review is a step in the right direction, the concessions do not go far enough towards restoring the rights of the consumer in buying herbal remedies; and calls for a further reduction in the influence of the Medicines Control agency in the availability of safe complementary remedies and vitamin and mineral supplements.
