MINEWORKERS' PENSIONS
EDM number 857 in 1998-99, proposed by Jon Trickett on 21/07/1999.
That this House, aware of the impending review of the Mineworkers Pension Scheme, conscious also of the current surpluses in the Scheme, draws the attention of the Government to the anomalous situation whereby redundant white collar staff in the industry can become pension beneficiaries at age 50, as can mineworkers elsewhere in the European Union, whilst British mineworkers currently cannot; and therefore calls on the Government seriously to consider proposals by which progress can be made towards British mineworkers being entitled to become full pension beneficiaries at age 50 subject to the availability of funds within the Scheme following actuarial calculation.
