Xerox Corporation Job Losses At Mitcheldean Gloucestershire
EDM number 85 in 1998-99, proposed by Diana Organ on 07/12/1998.
That this House expresses its deep concern at the announcement of the Xerox Corporation that they are to invest $270 million in Dundalk, Republic of Ireland, which will involve the transfer of and loss of 500 jobs at Xerox, Mitcheldean, Gloucestershire; notes that this is in spite of its being one of the most efficient Xerox manufacturing operations in the world, which enjoys excellent industrial relations; notes with grave concern that the transfer of jobs and consequent redundancies has been announced without any consultation with the employees, their representatives or local government; that the effect on the local economy will be severe as the Xerox Corporation is the major employer and provides support to many other local businesses as well as significantly contributing to the skills training for the manufacturing industry in the area; further notes its deep disquiet at the use of financial incentives by the Irish Government to attract the Xerox Corporation to Dundalk at the expense of British jobs; and expresses its concern at this unfair competition.
