Climate Change Levy (Northern Ireland)

EDM number 844 in 1998-99, proposed by Roy Beggs on 19/07/1999.

That this House recognises the obligation on the Government to introduce measures to reduce carbon emission throughout the United Kingdom in line with the Kyoto Agreement; further notes that Northern Ireland has already achieved its share of these target emission reductions as a result of domestic and industrial consumers and the Ballylumford power station recently switching from oil to gas as their choice of fuel source; notes also that Northern Ireland business already suffers the highest electricity costs of anywhere in the United Kingdom whilst having to compete with foreign competitors in close proximity who benefit from much cheaper energy costs; and for these reasons, calls on the Government to exclude Northern Ireland from the measures currently proposed in the Climate Change Levy.

This motion has been signed by a total of 21 MPs.
