Criminal Defence Service
EDM number 840 in 1998-99, proposed by Andrew Dismore on 15/07/1999.
That this House insists that all state-funded criminal defence services should not be provided by private sector lawyers and calls for salaried lawyers to be employed to provide such services; believes that a mixed economy of private sector and salaried lawyers would provide an effective criminal defence service and quality and value for money competition for the private sector; and calls on the Government to re-introduce such measures at the earliest opportunities.
This motion has been signed by a total of 94 MPs, 2 of these signatures have been withdrawn.
