Servicemen With Asbestos-Related Illness
EDM number 795 in 1998-99, proposed by Mike Hancock on 07/07/1999.
That this House recognises the contribution made to this country by thousands of former service personnel who are now suffering from asbestos-related illnesses because of the work they did while serving; further notes that the time between exposure to asbestos dust and the first signs of the disease is typically between 15 and 40 plus years; regrets that former service personnel whose exposure to asbestos dust and fibre was before 15th May 1987 are prevented from claiming compensation; and calls on the Government to introduce a compensation scheme for all former service personnel affected by illnesses caused by their exposure to asbestos during their service.
