Recognition Of Kashmiri Nationality In Census
EDM number 760 in 1998-99, proposed by Lorna Fitzsimons on 24/06/1999.
That this House welcomes Ministers' proposals to change the national census to allow the Kashmiri population in the United Kingdom to write in their chosen identity; notes that the Irish United Kingdom community had this ability at the last census, and that in the next census it is proposed to formally give Irish as a choice rather than having to write it in; further notes that the Kashmiri population in the United Kingdom consists of up to half a million people; further notes that the census is there to provide crucial data for public and private sector providers and that data on the Kashmiri community needs to be systematically gathered to be of use; and requests the Government to reconsider the proposal to formally recognise the Kashmiri population in the next census.
