DRIVERS' HEALTH

EDM number 694 in 1998-99, proposed by Edward O'Hara on 26/05/1999.

That this House notes with concern the incidence of car accidents caused by drivers suffering from dementia and other degenerative medical conditions which affect their fitness to drive but which have not been notified to the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority; urges Her Majesty's Government to legislate to strengthen procedures for ensuring that patients act upon the advice of their doctors and that they should notify the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority of such conditions when they are diagnosed; and urges insurance companies to enforce more rigorously the requirement that applicants for car insurance should make full disclosure of medical conditions which affect their fitness to drive.
