Rnid Hearing Test Campaign
EDM number 63 in 1998-99, proposed by Jenny Tonge on 01/12/1998.
That this House notes there are five million people in the United Kingdom who have a level of deafness such that they would benefit from the wearing of hearing aids, yet there are at present only two million people who have been fitted with them; notes further that unrecognised hearing loss can lead to isolation, frustration and serious harm to relationships and job prospects; notes also the existing wide variation in the quality of audiological services throughout the United Kingdom especially in relation to waiting times, staffing levels, the range of aids available and the quality of follow-up and rehabilitation; therefore welcomes the launch of the campaign by the Royal National Institute for Deaf People to promote hearing tests; and calls upon the Government to improve NHS audiological services and for the NHS to work with the RNID to reduce significantly the figure of three million people who are currently not benefiting from a hearing aid.
