Assisted Area Status For The Coventry, Warwickshire And Solihull Sub-Region
EDM number 62 in 1998-99, proposed by Jim Cunningham on 01/12/1998.
That this House notes that the Government is currently reviewing the assisted areas map, and supports the case made recently for a revised assisted area in the Coventry, Warwickshire and Solihull sub-region by the Coventry and Warwickshire Partnerships; notes that whilst the economy of the sub-region has clearly improved in recent years, it remains vulnerable to sudden changes in manufacturing, export conditions and the decisions of overseas owners who control many of the major firms in the area and that social conditions and the physical environment require substantial improvement in Coventry, Nuneaton and Bedworth, North Warwickshire and North Solihull; and believes that a revised assisted area focusing on the areas above would meet the Government's need to reduce total UK coverage whilst continuing to support these disadvantaged areas in their necessary regeneration.
