Statue Of Lloyd George In Parliament Square

EDM number 60 in 1998-99, proposed by Richard Livsey on 30/11/1998.

That this House supports the campaign to place a statue of David Lloyd George on a plinth in Parliament Square; acknowledges the enormous contribution that he made as Chancellor in initiating the creation of the welfare state through the introduction of old age pensions and other radical social reforms in the interests of the welfare of the people of Great Britain; acclaims his great leadership as Prime Minister in overcoming enormous difficulties and winning the First World War; endorses the fact that this Welsh wizard was one of Britain's greatest statesmen who made a massive contribution to its progress into democratic civilisation and through his yellow book to conquering unemployment and whose Liberal vision is still relevant today; and recognises that these are compelling reasons why his contribution to British society should now be publicly acknowledged by placing a statue of him in Parliament Square.
