Cheltenham Town F.c.

EDM number 589 in 1998-99, proposed by Nigel Jones on 27/04/1999.

That this House congratulates the players, managers, supporters and directors of Cheltenham Town Football club on winning the Nationwide Conference to add to last season's victory in the FA Umbro Trophy; relishes the prospect of the club playing next season in the Football League for the first time in their 107 year history; applauds the visionary leadership of Chairman Paul Baker and the Board of Directors in supporting the incisive skills of Manager Steve Cotterill, and in securing improvements to the Whaddon Road ground to bring it up to Football League standard; applauds the supporters who are amongst the best-behaved fans in football; appreciates the backing of the local business community in sponsoring the club, and the media in covering in graphic detail the glorious exploits of Captain Chris Banks and his talented team of players; and agrees with the large number of people in East Gloucestershire who have expressed the view often and loudly that the historic county should henceforth be known as Cheltenhamshire.
