Lancashire Accents And The Bury Call Centre

EDM number 574 in 1998-99, proposed by David Chaytor on 21/04/1999.

That this House welcomes the decision by Cellnet to open a new call centre in Bury, creating 2,000 jobs for local people; notes that, in addition to the suitability of the site and the excellent communication skills of local people, one of the significant factors determining the choice of location was the 'soothing' and 'trustworthy' nature of the Lancashire accent; recognises the increasing importance of regional accents as an expression of cultural diversity within the United Kingdom; and calls on the Government further to encourage and promote the use of regional accents in all spheres of public life.

This motion has been signed by a total of 19 MPs.
