Membership Of The Health And Safety Commission

EDM number 505 in 1998-99, proposed by Ian Gibson on 30/03/1999.

That this House is concerned at the announcement on 23rd March that Abdul Chowdry has been appointed as a member of the Health and Safety Commission; and notes that until April 1998 Mr Chowdry had been involved with Turner and Newall plc, formerly the United Kingdom's largest asbestos group, for over 30 years, and that his appointment to the body responsible for overseeing occupational health and safety issues in the United Kingdom is both inappropriate and insensitive especially at a time when the Government is moving towards a ban on the use of chrysotile (white asbestos).

This motion has been signed by a total of 20 MPs.
