Centenary Of The First Fatal Motor Car Accident

That this House observes that 25th February marks the 100th anniversary of the first recorded deaths from an accident involving a motor vehicle, at Grove Hill, Harrow, in 1899; is appalled that many thousands of people have been killed in road accidents in the century which has followed; is dismayed that each year nearly 3,600 people die in accidents on roads in the UK; notes that, based on statistics from the Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions, the estimated value attributed to a fatal road accident is around ú1 million, a serious accident ú120,000 and a slight injury accident ú12,000; welcomes initiatives by the previous and present governments to improve road safety; congratulates all who have campaigned and worked towards reducing the number of fatal and injury accidents; and urges the Government to give increased support and encouragement to local authorities and others to introduce further measures to reduce the number of casualties from road accidents.
