Reform Of The Electricity Market
EDM number 27 in 1998-99, proposed by Edward Leigh on 24/11/1998.
That this House endorses the Government's commitment to fight global warming; notes that most of the carbon dioxide reductions achieved during the 1990s was because of a switch from coal to gas as a fuel for power generation; further notes that a continuation of this trend is the best, cheapest and most practical opportunity for further reductions of carbon dioxide emissions; and therefore calls upon the Government to complete its reform of the electricity market as rapidly as possible so that a fair market place for all fuels can be established, removing any need for there to be a presumption against new gas-fired power stations, allowing gas to resume its contribution towards a cleaner environment and reductions in carbon dioxide.
