UK Chefs Campaign On Gene Foods
EDM number 255 in 1998-99, proposed by Alan Simpson on 28/01/1999.
That this House congratulates the nation's chefs and food writers for launching their own campaign against genetically-modified foods; recognises that this is in line with the view of 70 per cent. of the population who oppose genetic manipulation of the food chain; notes the warnings given by Greenpeace and others that genetically-modified crops also risk the development of new superweeds and cannot be prevented wider gene migration affecting both human and environmental health; and joins in the call for a moratorium on genetically-modified trials and a shift in subsidy priorities in favour of traditional and organic farming.
