Death Of Caroline Bacon And The Provision Of Contraceptives To Minors;amdt. Line 2:
EDM number 172A1 in 1998-99, proposed by Jenny Tonge on 18/01/1999.
leave out from 'stroke' to end and add 'notes that the contraceptive pill is a very safe and reliable method of contraception for the majority of women and this extremely rare incident should not be used to undermine confidential contraception for under 16s; notes that the Office of National Statistics recorded 33,381 abortions for teenagers in 1997, 3,434 of which were for girls under 16 and that further restrictions in access to contraception and advice would be likely to increase this number; further notes that doctors providing contraceptive advice should be trained and aware of the contra-indications of pill use, so that they can advise women appropriately; believes that under 16s who are already, or who are considering becoming sexually active should have access to confidential and sympathetic advice about contraception and be encouraged to talk to their parents or carers; and recognises the hugely positive impact the availability of the pill has made to women's lives over the last 30 years.'.
