British Activity Holiday Associations
EDM number 129 in 1998-99, proposed by Christopher Fraser on 15/12/1998.
That this House notes that the British Activity Holiday Association provides high quality holidays and courses to more than 200,000 children each year; understands that the industry's 4,000 employees, many of whom are students, receive incomes consistent with, or higher than, the proposed hourly national minimum wage rates once the value of the board and lodging provided is included; further notes that the draft national minimum wage regulations allow only a token amount towards the costs of such accommodation and nothing towards the cost of meals; believes that the community ethos of the residential experience for children and staff was not acknowledged by the draft national minimum wage regulations; calls for the Government to adopt the straightforward and sensible amendments proposed by the British Activity Holiday Association so that at least ú70 per week can be deducted where board and lodging is integral to employment; and looks forwards to the activity holiday industry thriving rather than foundering in 1999 and beyond.
