Corporal Punishment In Schools
EDM number 808 in 1997-98, proposed by Llin Golding on 18/02/1998.
That this House notes that corporal punishment was made illegal in state schools in 1987; further notes that Sir William Utting's Report of the Review of the Safeguards for Children Living Away from Home, 'People Like Us', recommended the removal of the right to use corporal punishment from boarding schools which still retain it and that corporal punishment has been abandoned by all the well-known independent schools; notes that none of the independent school associations in any way promotes or defends corporal punishment and that both the Headmasters' Conference and the Incorporated Association of Preparatory Schools support the extension of prohibition to cover children attending private schools; and calls on the Government to amend the School Standards and Framework Bill to outlaw corporal punishment in private schools.
This motion has been signed by a total of 31 MPs.
