MINERS' PENSIONS

EDM number 791 in 1997-98, proposed by Dafydd Wigley on 13/02/1998.

That this House notes with dismay that the Government has taken ú748 million from miners' pension funds in order to help fund the long-awaited and much-needed compensation package for those suffering from emphysema and chronic bronchitis following the recent successful NACCODS court case; and calls on the Government not to take any more money from the Minworkers' Pension Scheme and the British Coal Staff Superannuation Scheme surpluses and to allow the money to be used for the benefit of pensioners and widows, and to introduce a comprehensive emphysema and chronic bronchitis compensation scheme for miners, quarrymen and their widows, funded by the Treasury.

This motion has been signed by a total of 17 MPs.
