Workers And Democracy

EDM number 752 in 1997-98, proposed by Teddy Taylor on 05/02/1998.

That this House expresses its horror at the news that 4,800,000 are now unemployed in Germany; expresses its sympathy for, and solidarity with, the massive army of unemployed in the European Union; urges the representatives of working people to appreciate the utter pointlessness of marches and demonstrations in Bonn or elsewhere to protest against elected governments; urges the trade union movement to wake up and realise that the current economic policies stem from criteria operated by officials of the EU over which the workers and voters have no influence and make no provision for elected representatives to adjust policies to take account of human needs or deprivation; and in particular appeals to the United Kingdom trade union movement to abandon the costly and lavish conferences organised by Euro-promoting organisations and instead to spend their time speaking to the unemployed on the Continent.
