Personal Computers And Millennium Compliance
EDM number 69 in 1997-98, proposed by Nigel Jones on 04/06/1997.
That this House notes reports that personal computers which are not millennium compliant are still being sold to users; is concerned that in a test of 500 personal computers containing Bios chips with a 1997 manufacture date, carried out by year 2000 PC specialist Greenwich Mean Time, 47 per cent. were not compliant, and that a further test found that 93 per cent. of pre-1997 Bios chips did not comply; is aware that these tests indicate that millions of computers in the United Kingdom may be non-compliant; congratulates Computer Weekly and others in the media for their long campaign to raise public awareness of the serious difficulties likely to be met in all sectors if systems are not able to handle the change to the year 2000; and calls the Government to ban the sale of further personal computers which are not millennium compliant.
