Antarctica And Greenpeace
EDM number 656 in 1997-98, proposed by Jeremy Corbyn on 16/01/1998.
That this House extends congratulations to Greenpeace for its persistent campaigning over many years in opposing the commercial exploitation of Antarctica and for the protection of its environment and ecosystem; recognises that the ratification of the Antarctic Protocol has only come about because of the persistence of environmental campaigners the world over to persuade parliaments to agree a protocol which protects land and sea which extends beyond the 16th parallel; and hopes and trusts that this marks the start of greater protection for fish, mammal and bird populations throughout Southern oceans which have been in danger of extinction through unscrupulous mineral exploitation; and further recognises that the planet's survival depends on the protection of our natural environment to ensure that the ecosystem benefits all life on the plant.
