Listed Sporting Events
EDM number 621 in 1997-98, proposed by Bill Rammell on 19/12/1997.
That this House commends the long-standing relationship between the English Cricket Board and the BBC; recognises that this has led to high quality broadcasting of exceptional quality events; stresses the benefits to young people of seeing first-class sport on television; welcomes the inspiration this brings to future players and fans; believes that these benefits should be available to all and not just the children of dedicated sports fans; welcomes the money that has been invested in sport through the payments by satellite and cable customers; welcomes also the substantial payments made by terrestrial television companies for sporting events, not least the ú33.5 million paid to the English Cricket Board by the BBC over the period 1994 to 1998; believes that there are no strong reasons for de-listing home Test matches; condemns the suggestion that there is a qualitative difference between the Lords Test and other tests; strongly urges the Department of Culture, Media and Sport Advisory Committee on Listed Sporting Events to maintain the current levels of public access to Test cricket; and expresses the firm belief that this will lead to a continual improvement in the success of British cricket.
