Luxembourg European Council And Ireland

EDM number 616 in 1997-98, proposed by John D Taylor on 18/12/1997.

That this House welcomes the Council decision to set up a European conference of all member states and European states aspiring to membership of the European Union; welcomes the fact that all participants must have respect for other countries' sovereignty; is pleased that all participants must settle territorial disputes by peaceful means, in particular through the jurisdiction of the International Court of Justice in the Hague; and trusts that the Republic of Ireland will now honour its acceptance of these standards by referring its constitutional claims to part of the territory of the United Kingdom, especially Articles 2 and 3 of the Irish Constitution, to the International Court of Justice so that this ongoing irritant to relations between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland may be resolved on the basis of European Union principles as now endorsed by the Republic of Ireland.
