Havering And Thurrock (Sorting Office)

EDM number 549 in 1997-98, proposed by Andrew Mackinlay on 02/12/1997.

That this House calls on the Chief Executive of the Post Office to explain why class 3 'mailsort' post has not been delivered in many areas of Havering and Thurrock since 20th November; demands that he explains to his commercial customers how he intends to reimburse them; is concerned that the reduced postal service within the Romford postal district means that in many areas there is now only one delivery each day which is causing a build-up of undelivered mail including Sky TV and Cable magazines and bills; is dismayed that since 28th November 'live mail' has been stored in the old post office garage in Grays sorting office and that some letters have now been delayed for two weeks, that untrained and unscreened casual workers have been hired to reduce the postal back-log instead of giving low paid, dedicated and popular postmen and women the opportunity of earning overtime and that members of the public phoning the customer care line to complain are being fobbed-off by management; and requires that the Chief Executive sort out the chaos in the sorting office with some expedition by standing by the loyal and dedicated postal staff.
