Thamesmead Town Ltd
EDM number 489 in 1997-98, proposed by John Austin on 24/11/1997.
That this House welcomes the Government's intention to restore democratic government to London by establishing a Greater London Authority; notes that when the Greater London Council was abolished, the publicly-owned rented housing, development land and other assets were transferred to a private development company, Thamesmead Town Ltd and not to the two local authorities, the London boroughs of Bexley and Greenwich; recalls that the previous Government said that Thamesmead Town would be controlled by a board of nine locally elected directors and that only elected directors would have a vote; notes that this promise was broken and that the previous Government sanctioned the appointment of six additional paid directors who live outside the area; further notes that one elected director has been sacked and a further two hounded out of office, that the previous council tenancies have been convented to private tenancies and that tenants were denied an opportunity to choose a landlord; and calls on Her Majesty's Government to give all tenants of Thamesmead Town Ltd the right to choose a landlord and for the development land and other assets of the company which were previously in the ownership of the GLC to be transferred to the London Boroughs of Bexley and Greenwich.
