Ofsted Inspection Of Hackney Lea

EDM number 465 in 1997-98, proposed by Brian Sedgemore on 17/11/1997.

That this House notes that Professor Gus John, formerly the Director of Education in Hackney has drawn up a critique of the Ofsted inspection of Hackney LEA and sent a copy to Government Ministers as well as to their Improvement Team; notes that Professor Gus John has expressed concern that Hackney's Chief Executive, Tony Elliston, is using the Ofsted inspection report as a vindication of his position in respect of the quality of the services in Hackney and in order to hide his own incompetence in allowing services to run down during his own tenure of office; and believes that Professor Gus John is right to call on Ministers in the Department of Education not to lose their nerve nor to allow the Chief Executive, in the interests of some mindless technocratic arrangements to undo all the things that the LEA in Hackney has painstakingly and successfully put together to promote life long learning since 1989.
